The Hastings Performing Arts Center (HPAC) has completed a significant upgrade to its audio system, dramatically expanding its sound capabilities and enhancing the experience for performers and audiences alike.

At the center of the project is a new Yamaha DM7EX digital sound console, which triples HPAC’s audio capacity compared to its previous system. The original sound board had reached its maximum capability, limiting future growth. The new console allows HPAC to support more complex productions, larger ensembles, and higher technical demands across student, community, and professional performances.

In addition to the new sound board, HPAC staff refocused and optimized the existing speaker system to improve clarity and balance throughout the auditorium. A new audio processor was also installed, allowing HPAC to manage sound throughout the entire facility, including the lobby, backstage areas, dressing rooms, green room, and other support spaces, from a centralized system.

The previous sound board has been repurposed and will now be dedicated exclusively to livestreams and video broadcasts. Because audio mixes for video require different balances than live sound in the room, this separation allows HPAC to deliver higher-quality audio for online audiences without compromising the in-person experience.

“This upgrade positions HPAC for the future,” said Spencer White, HPAC Site Coordinator. “We had completely outgrown our previous system. The new console and processing give us the flexibility, clarity, and capacity needed to support everything from school concerts and community events to touring professional productions, both in the room and online.”

The total cost of the project was nearly $80,000 and was fully funded by the Friends of HPAC, made possible through generous donations from patrons and significant support from the Baum Family Foundation.

The upgraded audio system will make its debut next month, just in time for a full slate of student, community, and professional programming.
